MetLife Stadium is in East Rutherford, New Jersey — not in Manhattan. The smart way in is rail to the Meadowlands. The catch is which train service is running for your match, because the prices vary a lot.

The Meadowlands Rail Station is right at the stadium. On event days trains shuttle between the stadium and Secaucus Junction, where you connect to the rest of NJ Transit and, via PATH, to New York City. From Manhattan you'd typically go New York Penn Station → Secaucus → Meadowlands.
For the World Cup, NJ Transit set up a dedicated, pricier round-trip service ($105 train / $80 shuttle). On normal event days the regular Meadowlands train is far cheaper (~$12). Which one runs depends on the match, so check NJ Transit for your specific date before you assume a price.
